John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s activism might have been the reason behind their rather turbulent public relationship.
Despite their rather impactful efforts to spread the message of peace in the world back in the early 70s, their private lives, were chaotic as revealed by their only son, Sean Ono Lennon.
An expansive new box set overseen by him, gave detailed insights into the legendary musical couple’s ups and downs during that period.
“The FBI were tailing them and tapping their phones,” the 49-year-old revealed to PEOPLE magazine, recalling the time recently declassified documents revealed, back when the government was planning on arresting John over false drug charges. “Nixon was trying to deport them. It was really terrifying,” Sean said.
The unsettling 18-month long period, that even led to the couple’s separation and leading to the time as being labelled John’s “Lost Weekend,” made the world to believe that Mind Games, the Beatles’ star’s hit 1973 project, was a break-up album.
However, Sean has unveiled that this assumption could not be further from the truth.
For proof, he brought up the album’s cover, a collage the Imagine crooner made featuring photos of himself and Ono. “My mother is this giant mountain in the distance,” he pointed out.
“The whole album is about my mom,” he said, adding, “They’re mostly love songs about her. My dad declared to the world that ‘John and Yoko’ were one word.”
“I think he always had his heart set on her. He was so in love with her. They had a legendary love and I think that this album is infused with that love. You can hear it,” Sean Ono Lennon concluded.
