As Saturday Night Live celebrates its milestone 50th season, former cast member and Oscar nominee Bill Murray has expressed interest in returning to the show as a host.

While speaking on the New Heights podcast, Murray shared his admiration for the current cast and creative team, defending the show against criticism that it has lost its edge.

According to Deadline, Murray stated, “People always give me a hard time about, ‘Oh, the original show was so great, and it’s lousy now.’ And I say, ‘No, it’s not.’ The show that’s on now, they do stuff that’s just as good as anybody ever did, all the time.”

Moreover, Murray, who was a writer and cast member on SNL from 1977 to 1980, became unknown for iconic characters like Dick Lanky and Honker.

Meanwhile, he has hosted the show five times since leaving and hopes to take the stage again during this historic season.

In regards to this, Murray revealed, “I told ’em I’d like to host one this year. So, maybe if I get organized. I’d like to try it one more time. It might be the last time to try it.”

Additionally, Murray’s comments came as SNL prepares for a lineup of former cast members hosting December episodes, with Chris Rock hosting on December 14 and Martin Short on December 21.

Furthermore, musical guests include Gracie Abrams and Hozier.

It is worth mentioning that the iconic sketch comedy show, created by Lorne Micheals in 1975, will officially celebrate its 50th anniversary with a primetime special airing on Sunday, February 16, 2025.
