Robert Pattinson has shared his thoughts about his Die My Love character’s helplessness about his wife’s postpartum struggle.
Die My Love, based on Ariana Harwicz’s 2017 novel of the same name, follows Jennifer Lawrence’s new mom’s struggle with depression and psychosis.
Both Pattinson and Lawrence could understand their characters’ plight, being new parents themselves.
The Twilight star noted that as a husband, “trying to figure out what your role in the relationship is afterwards is incredibly difficult,” explaining that his character is a common guy that doesn’t “have the vernacular” to be able to support his wife.
“Like he’s just a guy. He doesn’t seem to be the guy who is looking at TikTok reels of parenting and stuff,” he explained.
“He’s just kind of hoping the relationship will go back to what it was and not understanding why this is happening to them, why this intruder has entered this relationship. I guess it’s a fear that everyone has as soon as they have a kid,” he added.
Reflecting on his usual pick of characters to play, he noted that his ie My Love character is the opposite of what he usually plays.
“I’m attracted to characters who are incredibly abrasive and quite obscure, but Jackson was a normal guy,” Robert Pattinson said. “When you’re dealing with a person going through post-partum or any kind of mental illness, you’re trying to deal with her isolation and trying to figure out what your role in the relationship is, and trying to hold on.”
